🪨🕶️ They are very commonly found under rocks of the intertidal zone, and this one just wishes to go hide again… These creatures are sensible to dessiccation so they are avoiding light and looking for the shade. This behavior is called photophobia. This is exactly what we can see here, he is moving away form the strong light of my binocular!

👀🤖 But if they can avoid light, how can they sense it? there is no visible eyes! Actually, what looks like a basic shell is a structure full of sensors (is it me or it is getting more and more similar to a spaceship?!) Chiton have light sensitive structures in their shell plates called 𝗮𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀, and some species even have mineral based lenses embedded in the shell!

There is a circulatory system with a heart, a digestive system, a nervous system, a reproductive system… The “head” is under the cephalic plate, that can be distinguished with its typical V-shape (left side of the 3rd panel).

👅🦷 On the anterior side, you can find the mouth and the radula, a special “teethed tongue” that chitons use to scrape calcareous algae of the rocks. Chitons also have a brain-like structure, in the form of a nerve ring located around the mouth.

🦶🪨 Just like other mollusks, they have a strong muscular foot to help them firmly attach to the substrate. It’s the equivalent of a very strong sucker! Try to remove a chiton from its rock, you will see!

🐚🧥 Did you know that mollusks shells are formed, repaired and maintained by a part of the anatomy called the mantle. In the case of our chiton, it’s called the mantle girdle.

Have you ever heard of isopods?

👀🏖️ Open your eyes, because this species, 𝘋𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢, is one of the most commonly found in the intertidal zone on the NE altantic coast! They are typically found on a wide variety of mid- to lower littoral algae, and also in rock pools in the upper littoral zone.

💚🕵️‍♀️ I absolutely love the beautiful color pattern of the exoskeleton, perfectly blending with the seaweed, and ideal for camouflage!

🌱🌊 As you maybe guessed, 𝘋𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 is herbivorous, and they eat on the algae that they are found on. Like many animals of the intertidal zone, their life follow the rhythm of tides and they eat only when they are covered by the high tide.

🦀🦿 Isopods belong to crustaceans, just like shrimps and crabs, and they also have a hard exoskeleton. There are over 10,000 identified species worldwide, both terrestrial or marine! Their name comes from the fact that they have segments carrying typically 7 similar (“iso-”= equal) pairs of legs (-”pod” = foot).

🦷🦷 The name ‘bidentata’ (latin for ‘two-toothed’) comes from the two tooth-like projections on its back, which are unique to males of this species. It makes the pleotelson a key feature for the identification of the sex and the species. In 𝘋𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 males, the 6th segment is longer and have this typical pointy shape.

⚧️⚧️ This is a great exemple of 𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗺, that refers to differences in appearance, size, or other characteristics between males and females of the same species. Sexual dimorphism can be observed in many animal species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and insects.

🏊‍♂️🦶Uropods are paired appendages found at the rear end (posterior) of crustaceans, such as lobsters, crabs, shrimp, and isopods. Their structure and function can vary widely but they are typically used for locomotion and swimming.

✨🔵🐌 This adorable sea slug is the sacoglossan Elysia viridis. This is a Gastropod mollusca, just like land snails and slugs. You can identify this common species of the intertidal zone with its beautiful blue-green iridescent spots shining in the sun!

☀️🌱☀️ But this little guy also hides a superpower! Often called, “solar-powered” sea slugs, they can retain the chloroplasts from the seaweed that they eat in their own cells! It means that they are able to do like plants, and use the sun as source of energy! Isn’t it insane?

🥷🥗😋 This specific process is called kleptoplasty, litteraly meaning (chloro)plast thief… and is particularly important for the survival of the animal in periods of food scarcity! Don’t you wish you were able to do the same?!

🧬🔁🌱 Some open questions remain on the molecular mechanisms that allow them to maintain the chloroplasts functional within their own cells. Indeed, these are a very complex machineries specific to plants, and animal cells are not supposed to use them! It’s like using a very complex machine without the appropriate tools and instruction manual… To explain this, some researchers have proposed that seaweed genes (= the instruction manual) were transferred to the slug genome by horizontal transfer (understand “non-genealogically”), but this assumption remains debated in other species.

👁️👁️The 2 small eye spots are not very developed and probably provide a quite basic vision. On the contrary, rhinophores – the two rolled antenna at the front of the head – are the main sensory organs of sea slugs.

👃💧Coming from the greek [rhino-] = nose, rhinophores can sense chemicals diluted in the sea water, like an aquatic sense of smell. They likely help the animals to locate food sources, predators, and partners of the same species.

⚧️🌀 Indeed, even if this sacoglossan species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, the animals need to find a partner and act both as a male and female during cross-fertilisation. When they are done, the eggs are laid in a nice spirale on an algae, I hope to find one soon to show you!

🔰🫀 The two fleshy protrusionson each side of the body are called parapodia. On the inner side, we can see a network of dorsal vessels distributing the hemolymph – the equivalent of blood – from the heart to the entire body. This little guy has kept his parapods closed the whole time, but they sometimes extend to maximize the surface area, catch the sun’s rays and photosynthesize!

🔪🤕 Fun fact, a closely related species of sacoglossan (E.marginata) can perform an extreme form of autotomy. They can shed their entire body from the neck if they are attacked! The head is then sufficient to initiate a whole body regeneration and completely restore a functional body in no more than 18 days! Authors proposed that this amazing ability is facilitated by the endosymbiodic chloroplasts that provides energy independantly of food ingestion… I really wonder if Elysia viridis have the same surviving skills 🤔

🌎🏞️ They are abundantly present in nearly all known aquatic habitats on earth, from the oceanic abyss to temporary inland water bodies or even semi-terrestrial habitats such as soils with leaf litter! Maybe it is because of their carapace with two valves enclosing the soft body, that protects the organism against the potential dangers of the aquatic milieu 🤔…

⏰🪨 For all of these reasons, ostracods are also the most common arthropods in the fossil record. Study of ostracods fossils are often used in paleoenvironment and paleoclimatic studies, who would have guessed?!

📚🔬 Ever came across “sp.” or “spp.” in scientific literature? It stands for “species” or “multiple species” respectively (from the Latin species pluralis), indicating that while researchers might know the group, they’re not quite certain about the exact species.
💪🔄 🦾 As you can see, these arms are very delicate, but guess what, they can fully regenerate! That probably explains why this guy have 3 shorter arms, indicating he might have lost them at one point…

😱🔪💪 And wait, there is even more! Brittle stars can also perform 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆, meaning they can voluntarily detach their arms as a defense mechanism. Talk about a handy escape plan!

🐍💪🐍 Brittle stars are 𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒊𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒊𝒅𝒔, a name derived from the Greek words 𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 (“serpent”) and 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘴 (“tail”) perfectly describing their snakelike, scale-covered arms. I just love watching as they gracefully move away!

💿🦷The central disk has a diameter of 5mm maximum and contains all the internal organs. Another time I will show you the ventral side with its impressive 5 jaws…

💪🦾Each of the 5 arms is approximately 4x times longer than the diameter of the disk and attached to it under the radial shields. The arms are supported by an internal skeleton of calcium carbonate plates called vertebral ossicles, forming a spine-like structure. These “vertebrae” are articulated by means of ball-and-socket joints, and are controlled by muscles.

✨💡Last but not least, these star brittles are bioluminescent, and can produce light as a defense mechanism! With their ability to do autotomy, they can detach one of their glowing arm as a luminous bait to distract their predator and escape! How CRAZY is that!

😱🌋They are scary, aren’t they?! Up close, these seemingly innocuous creatures look like miniature volcanoes, with a scary hand reaching out!

🦀 🦞As they have a hard exoskeleton, they are arthropods, related to crabs and lobsters. Adult barnacles are sessile animals, growing their shells directly onto the substrate.

🫴🪶Inside, barnacles hide a fascinating filter-feeding mechanism, using feathery appendages called cirri to sweep nutrients from the water.

🦐🌋The anatomy of the barnacle – as adults, represent a unique example of modified crustaceans, resembling a sessile “shrimp” affixed to rocky substrates. Their calcareous shell plates serves as both protection and anchorage.

💧🚪Sessile (fixed) animals in the intertidal zone have evolved strategies to combat desiccation between high tides, like these opercular plates that help them retain moisture. It’s all about survival skills!

➿🦶Ever wondered where the name 𝘊𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 comes from? It’s derived from the Latin words 𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘴 “curly” and 𝘱𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘴 from 𝘱𝘦𝘴 “foot”. Together, it means “curly-footed”, as a reference to the barnacle’s distinctive curled legs used in filter-feeding.

📚🙇 Charles Darwin wasn’t just about finches and evolution. He spent eight years studying barnacles (1846-1854), laying the groundwork for Cirripedia studies, and eventually influencing his groundbreaking theories of natural selection. Even the father of evolution had a barnacle phase!

🫀🔙 Thanks to the transparency of this shrimp species 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘴, you can see the heart beat through their back! Indeed, unlike us with our hearts in the front, insects and crustaceans have theirs on their backs!

🦐 💧But here’s the cool part: like all arthropods, shrimps have an open circulatory system, and use a fluid called hemolymph – analogous to blood in vertebrates – to transport nutrients and oxygen around their body cavity. You probably also noticed that hemolymph is not red like blood, but rather blue (in theory! here it looks quite transparent I have to admit😅).

What is amazing about bryozoans is that they are very different from other animals, but also incredibly diverse! Some can have a tree-like structure, a hard encrusting exoskeleton like this one, or form a sort of jelly ball…. I can’t wait to show you more species, sometimes there is 3 or 4 different ones in the same sample!

🌀🐚 You have probably seen these small white swirls on algae or under rocks before, but did you know they were worms?!

🪱 Spirorbis are small sedentary worms, living in their own calcium carbonate coiled tube shell. Just like earthworms in your garden, they belong to annelids (a phylum of +22 000 species) and they have a segmented body.

⏰ 🌀The rotation of the swirl is specific to each species! This one, Spiorobis spirorbis is always coiled clockwise and super common on this brown algae (fucus).

🫣🌊 They can completely retract within the tube, sealed by the operculum. It protects them from predators and turbulent tides but also from desiccation when they get out of the water…

🌀🐚 The Spirorbis tube worms build their own calcareous tube using special glands in their upper body segment. Inside the tube, the body is segmented, like all annelid worms 🐛!

👑 🫁The branchial crown is not only their primary feeding structure, it is also their respiratory organ! It’s like having lungs on the top of the head, how crazy is that?!

🔆👄 Just like bryozoans, they are filter feeders and use their specialized crown of tentacles around the heard to catch planktonic particles in the water column. Seems like a trending way to eat around there!

🔐🫣 The operculum (visible on the right of the top picture) seals the opening of the tube to protect the worm from desiccation at low tide.
